5/21/2013 - The A.V. Club
Louisville band Coliseum has released four albums of blistering rock that falls somewhere between punk and noise; the latest is the massive Sister Faith. The band's choice of Eddie Money's "Shakin'" was pretty perfect: It's such a gloriously simple song that it could only benefit from such an intense treatment. Coliseum took it up a notch by asking Bruce Lamont to bring in his saxophone and give the whole thing some extra color. (Experimental music fans will recognize Lamont from the bands Yakuza and Bloodiest; Led Zeppelin fans from his portrayal of Robert Plant in the unstoppable tribute band Led Zeppelin 2.) Bonus points to Coliseum for being inspired by the greatest crank-call series in the history of such things, Longmont Potion Castle.

Mel Brooks: Make A Noise will make its debut as part of PBS' American Masters series on Monday, May 20 (and will be available on DVD the next day), and we've got an exclusive outtake from the documentary about the fabled comedy actor-director. It's an interview with Bill Pullman talking about the filming of Spaceballs, the Star Wars spoof that you've either seen zero times or a hundred. There's a tense moment with Brooks, Pullman, and John Candy, as well as some talk about using green screen. Enjoy.

5/14/2013 - The A.V. Club
Wisconsin-based duo Blessed Feathers has a sweet little meet-cute story: They met in a restaurant where they both still work, and started playing songs together and dating around the same time. There's usually some banjo in their folky mix, but here the two tackled Paul Simon's "Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard" with just their voices and guitar. The band's debut EP is Peaceful Beasts In An Ocean Of Weeds, and if you enjoy this cover you'll enjoy that as well.
